A bit of a Miller mystery is afoot over at Bibliophemera where Chuck Whiting has gotten hold of a set of correspondence between Miller and an Ohio bookseller named Paul North Jr.
In 1964 North wrote to Miller asking him to autograph a few books for his collection, a simple enough transaction were it not for the involvement of a mystery third party. A woman who knew both men claimed that Miller owed her a sum of money and she apparently had been making a career out of telling a certain story about him (whether the story involved the debt alone or something else is unclear). In any case, North was offering to pay off the debt himself in exchange for Miller's autographs. For now, the rest of the story and the name of the mystery woman are being withheld until Whiting can determine whether any of those involved are still living.
